“Unknown Pleasures” Festival / NTUE / Taipei, TW

20

Unknown Pleasures is a collective exhibition celebrated in Taipei during September 2017, organized by Sonder Foundation in collaboration with the National Taipei University of Education (NTUE) and the support of the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office in Taipei (NTIO). “Unknown pleasures” was created as a project to reunite modern abstract artists from very different geographic origins but with an special theme in common.
All artists started showcasing their works on the streets of their respective cities of origin and are now pushing the boundaries of the traditional art display. Each of them has a unique style and execute different techniques, but their common characteristic is that their works are intimately connected to the city and the urban landscape, witness of the history and the passing time. Their art has been transforming the decaying urban landscape of the city into a living, open-air museum, where art can be enjoyed by everyone.

Taipei is a very clear example of rapid urban evolution. In only a century difference architectural and artistic influences have totally transformed the landscape of the city. From the Japanese-colonial classical architecture to the current top-notch architecture that is currently competing for the remnants of the city’s past, Taipei’s quick and ever-changing urban development has left behind architectural corners, sort of leftovers that offer a glimpse of the architecture during the last century. These artists are specialists in taking those leftovers and create ephemeral beauty where before there was only decay.

The artists featured in this exhibition were Coletivo Muda (BR), Robert Seikon (PL), Bartek Świątecki (PL), Maciej Swiatnicki (PL), and Zacharias Zedz (NL). Every artist prepared two works for this exhibition. The artists were present in Taipei during the exhibition, where they also participated in a series of art workshops co-organized by Sonder Foundation and the Fine Arts Department of the National Taipei University of Education.
